The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a program called the National Human Adipose Tissue Survey back in the 1980s. This survey helped them discover that different human fat samples contain traces of one dioxin and four industrial solvents. Moreover, nine other chemicals were found in more than 90 % of the fat samples. On average, 83 % of the samples contained PCBs.

What are dioxins?

Combustion processes, such as waste incineration, forest fires, backyard trash burning or different industrial process produce chemical contaminants known as dioxins. Once you inhale these toxins, your body stores them in your fat cells, in order to prevent them from damaging your organs.

Types of toxins

Toxins can be divided into 2 categories:

Water-soluble, which can be easily flushed away through the kidneys and fat-soluble, which have to be processed through the liver in order to become soluble.

Fat-soluble toxins include: pesticides, food additives, preservatives, pollutants, heavy metals, plastic and other environmental chemicals.

Liver-the first line of defense

The liver produces a greenish-yellow fluid, or bile, which is stored in the gallbladder. It has an important function in digesting fats and eliminating old red blood cells and some toxins from your body.

During digestion, the lymphatic system is able to select the absorbed fats and carry them to the liver. There, the good fats are turned into cholesterol, cell membranes, hormones, skin cells and brain cells, and the bad fats are processed and eliminated through the bile and they come out of our body through feces.

This is why it is essential to consume foods which are rich in fiber.

What is the function of the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic tissue or Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue surrounds the intestinal tract and it helps in the absorption and processing of the nutritional and toxic fats and it helps transport them to the lymphatic system. In order for this process to work, the digestive and lymphatic tissue have to be healthy.

These can be signs of a congested lymphatic tissue:

  • Belly weight
  • Allergies
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Joint stiffness
  • Skin irritations and itching
  • Swollen limbs
  • Constipation and diarrhea
  • Headaches

Why are toxins stored as fat?

In a normal process, the toxins are neutralized by white blood cells. However, if the lymphatic system is congested and unhealthy, the process can be hindered and toxins have to go back to the liver which then produces a thicker, ineffective bile, which creates a cycle of toxicity. The liver then begins to eject the fat-soluble toxins into the blood stream and they eventually find their way to the fat cells, where they are stored for many years and they cause oxidation and degeneration.

How to eliminate the toxins?

  1. Exercise

Start by introducing an active lifestyle. This will help you stay young and healthy and you won’t have excessive toxins. If you start exercising, you will be able to eliminate toxins through sweating. Also, the more physically active you are, the better your lymphatic and cardiovascular system will become.

  1. Detox

Make sure you detoxify your liver on a regular basis. Also, try not to expose yourself too much to toxins since your body will have to work harder in order to eliminate them. Try to eat organic foods and clean your home with natural products.

  1. Eat well

Balancing your diet and consuming more dietary fiber will help your bile absorption. Make sure you include more fruit, cruciferous vegetables, quinoa and oatmeal in your diet.

  1. Relax

Stress is one of the major factors which cause inflammation and it can lead to imbalance of your fat exchange. Try to lower your stress levels by exercising yoga, or other de-stressing activities.
